How come NASCAR is a sport, but cheer leading is not?

I could be wrong on this, but doesn't ESPN cover the cheerleading championships? I have seen it on tv, just not lately. In my opinion, if golf is a sport, so is cheerleading and Nascar. Out of those three, the participants in cheerleading probably have a higher chance of getting injured.
